On this day in 1849 Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious circumstances, the founder of the detective genre, his influence stretched far and wide, he brought horror into the sitting room, where it had been castles in the Carpathians, mansions in Manchester, and the snowy wastes of the Antarctic and other such far flung places, Poe's tales brought fear and death into the American readers home. As a literary critic his favorite target was Longfellow and his own detective writings influenced Sir Arthur Conan Doyle when he created Sherlock Holmes. Indeed Poe's influence went beyond just literary, from Music, to Movies, he even was credited in the invention of cryptography. While there are other more important works of literary art out there probably with more merit we can not deny the great influence this single mans work has had on popular culture as a whole and how his stories still manage to make us quake and shiver, our hearts to pound and even children to utter the words in wonder "Nevermore."

Of my most immemorial year."

From Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, Creature Feature, MC Lars and so many many more point to Poe as the influence to their music, their style, their muse. Poe is with us everywhere we go and has shaped so much of how we look at death that to try and pluck him out today would be the quintessential Gordian Knot.
Recipe for the day is The Raven 1 oz vodka
1 oz rum
1 oz blue curacao
1/2 oz Chambord
Preparation:
Pour the vodka, rum and blue curacao into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice.
Slowly pour the Chambord over the back of a bar spoon so it floats on top.
