K's Octoberween Day 8, so while strolling
through DA last night I ended up in perhaps the lowest of the low, the
darkest corner of DA, even the worst thing you could imagine seeing on
DA probably is nowhere near what actually lurks on that site; I know I
sure wasn't expecting it. So to completely gloss over the real horror I
am instead going to make my murderers out of wax and put them safely
away in tales of history. That's why today we are visiting "The Wax
Works" movies.
In
1924 the first Waxworks movie was made, German in origin consisting of
three stories. Harun Al-Rashid and his obsession with the bakers wife,
Ivan the terrible and his incessant turning of the hour glass and then
the main plot of a young writer hired by the wax museum to write about
the figures, in the stories of Harun Al-Rashid and Ivan the terrible,
however he has fallen in love with the Museum owners daughter and
features her in every story, and his next story is Jack the Ripper.
Instead of another simple storytelling the statue of Jack the Ripper has
come to life and is out for blood! youtu.be/Kz6BwtJ0WbY
Apparently
in 1933 Wax Museums still didn't make money, and in the classic Mystery
of the Wax Museum starring Fay Wray and the hardest working man in
Horror Lionel Atwill the story continues with Igor a wonderful and
talented sculpture whose partner decides to burn down his London Museum
rather than continue taking the loss. However what his partner didn't
bargain for was that Igor was a complete nutjob and viewed his
incredibly life like sculptures as real. Now in New York City Igor is
back and is trying to make a go of his museum one more time, but this
time horrifically burned and unable to do the sculpting work himself, he
goes a-looking for just the right candidates. youtu.be/3-KuaoGGKKI
1953
brought us House of Wax starring Vincent Price, Frank Lovejoy and
Phyllis Kirk and the one, the only Carolyn Jones AKA Morticia Adams
fame! How could I not love this movie, both Price and Jones are Horror
Genre incarnate. Love Love Love this movie youtu.be/BhgrPoVvQC8
In
1936 we had Midnight at Madame Tussaud's starring Lucille Lisle, James
Carew and Charles Oliver. A daring explorer bets his friends he can
spend a night in Madame Tussaud's chamber of horrors. Meanwhile, on the
outside, his young female ward is in danger from an unscrupulous gang.
Sort of like Night at the Museum but better in every way because it
doesn't have Ben Stiller. Unfortunately I couldn't find this film on
YouTube but in case you don't know about Madame Tussaude's real wax
museum which was founded in london by Marie Tussaude I have linked it
below. www.madametussauds.com/
Nightmare in Wax is a 1969 gogo boot bouffant donning remake of the basic House of Wax plot line youtu.be/xsD6jvtlHwY
1979
gave us Tourist Trap A group of young friends stranded at a secluded
roadside museum are stalked by the owner of the place, who has the power
to control his collection of mannequins. From this point on the idea of
killer dolls, mannequins and the like take over. youtu.be/YNdanpN9INI
We have the shitty Horror in the wax works in 1983 and a remake of Waxworks in 1988 youtu.be/yQ4FlHowFOc
In 1992 we had Waxworks 2 LOST IN TIME! Also crap but hey they can't all be winners right? youtu.be/ui8cEqqtwR8
However what IS a winner is this 1959 episode of Hitchcock present his own version of The Waxwork youtu.be/onsiCA0cqAA
Then in 2005 a remake of House of Wax was made starring yes, Paris Hilton. youtu.be/4iUedZZdCcM
Also
the Italian movie Maschera di Cera (The Wax Mask) from 1997 and 1985's
TERROR AT LONDON BRIDGE and 1994's THE NEW LEGEND OF SHAOLIN (aka LEGEND
OF THE RED DRAGON) both have sequences set at wax museums.
Tomorrow I will cover deranged dolls, murderous mannequins, and primeval Puppets!
As for song of the day since I refuse to post any Insane Clown Posse I instead opted for Creatures of the Night by Kiss. youtu.be/IlGckua_5dg
The
House of Wax really was just an excuse to make mention of my pin up of
the day Morticia Addams! My own personal fashion guru was played by
Carolyn Jones and Anjelica Huston I wont be including Daryl Hannah in
this list as no one that blond could possibly hold a candle to Carolyn
or Anjelica.
