Octoberween Day 12 Attack of the killer machines!
First up on the list is Brainscan from 1994 Before Grand Theft Auto, the idea of a video game where all you did was kill people seemed too far out to ever happen. But Brainscan dared to dream. Eddie Furlong (the kid that almost ruined Terminator 2) becomes obsessed by his new serial-killer themed video game and lured by a strange phantom named The Trickster. When the gameplay starts to become too real, things get all kinds of fun for horror fans. youtu.be/mT1Vr13s17U
up next is Tetsuo the Ironman The Japanese have brought us a lot of great tech-horror, from The Ring to Machine Girl. But Tetsuo really started it all, and spawned numerous sequels, with its strange story of cybornetic infection and revenge. When a metal fetishist is run down by a business man, the business man becomes haunted by him as he is forced to slowly mutate into a mechanical monstrosity. Filled with insane scrap-metal robot battles and buckets of gore, this is one batshit insane movie that will repeatedly press your "what the fuck?" button. youtu.be/NsBexRbpyxY
The there is Lawnmower man from 1992 While it bears the same name as a Stephen King short story, it is in no way related — even though they tried to promote it as such, prompting King to sue. In it, Jeff Fahey (Grindhouse, Body Parts) plays a Forrest Gump type who becomes a virtual reality demigod with the help of Remington Steele. Bursting with horribly outdated effects from the earliest days of CGI, and filling me with young-horror-nerd nostalgia from having seen this at the dollar theater multiple times, The Lawnmower Man is a film I always love to revisit. youtu.be/zJer9aivOrA
Since I already mentioned Christine I have to mention 1977's The Car! The original evil vehicle movie, The Car is about police captain James Brolin dealing with a diabolical Lincoln Continental that runs people down and even smashes through their homes in an effort to slaughter everything and everyone in this small desert town. A somewhat campy throwback to the late 70's road movies, The Car is simple but a hell of a lot of fun to watch. youtu.be/PoAD3kUmN9s
Videodrome 1993 One of Cronenbergs' least accessible yet most beloved films, Videodrome is visually stunning and over-stimulating — almost to a fault. But it is so horrific and bizarre that it should be required viewing for horror freaks. I have seen this multiple times and I still can't really tell you what it's about. Just watch it and live long in your new flesh. youtu.be/H5cLj6L6zvo
Then we have MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE directed and written by Stephen King and Starring Emillio Esteves as a small-time hood working at a truck stop for Pat Hingle, who steals the show in this as Bubba. When a strange comet flies over the earth, it leaves a trail of green space mist that makes all of the machines on the planet come alive and want to kill all humans. The main villains in this B-movie are 18 wheelers, including the iconic one with the Green Goblin grill, but other machines go berserk too including turkey carvers and a bad-ass soda machine.
Completely illogical (why do the humans' guns work for them instead of turning on them, and why does Yeardly's Smith's car allow her husband to operate it while they're being chased by a tow-truck?) and awkwardly accompanied by blasting AC/DC songs throughout, Maximum Overdrive is a skull-shattering shit-show of a movie but is also exceptionally entertaining and stands up to repeat views, perhaps because of its sheer madness. youtu.be/_jvqPvDUEW8
in 1995 we had Virtuosity staring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe about a virtual-reality serial killer manages to escape into the real world. youtu.be/KEDdaStz4kw
The next movie is by far my favorite (and has one of the best kiss scenes ever in existence as well as being a visual smorgasbord) is based on the Philip K Dick novel entitled "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" about a dystopian Los Angeles in which genetically engineered organic robots called replicants—visually indistinguishable from adult humans—are manufactured by the powerful Tyrell Corporation as well as by other "mega-corporations" around the world. Their use on Earth is banned and replicants are exclusively used for dangerous, menial or leisure work on off-world colonies. Replicants who defy the ban and return to Earth are hunted down and "retired" by police special operatives known as "Blade Runners". The plot focuses on a brutal and cunning group of recently escaped replicants hiding in Los Angeles and the burnt-out expert Blade Runner, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment to hunt them down. youtu.be/NoAzpa1x7jU
In 1992 we had Universal Soldier starring Jean-Claud Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as Luc and Scott who were killed in Vietnam, but the army has a secret project for reanimating dead people as near-perfect soldiers. youtu.be/HUwiKkgre6M
It is 2274. Some type of holocaust has decimated the earth, and the survivors sealed themselves into a domed city near Washington, D.C. To maintain the population balance, the computers that run the city have decreed that all people must die at 30. This system is enforced by "sandmen" : black-clad police operatives who terminate (kill) "runners" (those who attempt to live beyond 30). Logan, a sandman, is sent on a mission to find "sanctuary," which is a code- word used by the master computer to describe what it believes is a place to which runners have been escaping. Logan begins to question the system he serves and after seeing for himself that there is life beyond the dome, he returns to destroy the computer. youtu.be/LSUAAKFLoL0
An amusement park for rich vacationers provides its customers a way to live out their fantasies through the use of robots that provide anything they want. Two of the vacationers choose a wild west adventure. However, after a computer breakdown, they find that they are now being stalked by a rogue robot gunslinger. Starring Yule Brenner youtu.be/LcL3eP0Hfy4
On a distant mining planet ravaged by a decade of war, scientists have created the perfect weapon: a blade-wielding, self-replicating race of killing machines known as Screamers. This movie also based on a Philip K Dick story named Second Variety youtu.be/VLLwtcOB6i8
A robotic voice is heard over the intercom "Resistance is futile" a large cube shaped ship floats slowly into view, are you scared yet? Well you should be, and perhaps slightly aroused? From the Borg Queen, Picard as Locutypie to 7 of 9 Assimilation has never been so sexy...or half so scary! youtu.be/ItHcsIHshhs
Number six....those of you who watch battlestar Galactica (or Battlestar Depressica as I call it!) know what I'm talkin about! BG came out in 1978 however it reemerged in 2004 with a whole new look and cast including Edward James Olmose, Michael Hogan, Tricia Helfer and my favorite as Starbuck Katee Sackhoff. youtu.be/KLaTmro5MfE
We can not have a list without mentioning Robocop. youtu.be/EOeDYneScZw Set in a crime-ridden Detroit, Michigan in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is brutally murdered and subsequently revived by the malevolent mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products as a superhuman cyborg law enforcer known as "RoboCop". While not scary it was a big part of childhood viewing
along with Judge Dredd who is more of a petri dish human + weapons both of these series of films (and comics) come highly HIGHLY recommended by me. youtu.be/rpM106NQMzI
You forgot to say please............ youtu.be/Iw8PSN-S9-s
Thats right, Killer Machines pick of the day goes to the one, the only Terminator! Be it Arnie as T-101 , Robert Patrick as T-1000, Terminatrix Kristanna Loken as T-X, or my personal favorites from the Tv show Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles Summer Glau and Shirly Manson the Terminator movies had a significant impact on my childhood ( sarah's dream really effected me! youtu.be/93X32wUJMiA ) and I think the scene where T-1000 first heals his wounds showing he is made of liquid metal made us all shit our pants. Apparently the Library of Congress agreed and preserved the film in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Song of the day is Rachel's Song by Vengelis off the Blade Runner soundtrack youtu.be/olGTTzfxNiw
