"Nothing lasts forever. Well, I do." —Death

So the assignment this week was kind of confusing, I attempted to do nonrepresentational art, and tried to be as obscure and coy with the concept I was presenting as possible (I always think nonrepresentational art that has been done well is more like flirting or a burlesque show, they tease you with the idea of something but in the end you are still left wondering if you understood or got the right answer. This being said explaining ourselves and what each piece is supposed to mean is kind of cheating isn't it? Aren't the viewers supposed to make up their own mind?

Anywho, I digress. The theme I chose was "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" I know heavy right? Anyway I couldn't help it, I'm not a religious person in any sense of the word, but I think we have done a pretty bang up job destroying our world, be it violence, pollution etc and besides it was what the muse handed me so I ran with it, which also meant doing 4 pieces instead of three. I also based each piece off of a song lyric about the end of the world that matches each individual horseman. Enjoy!

All works by me!

Song 1: “The Man Comes Around,” by Johnny Cash

And I heard, as it were,
The noise of thunder:
One of the four beasts saying: “Come and see.”
And I saw. And behold, a white horse
There’s a man goin’ ‘round takin’ names
An’ he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won’t be treated all the same
There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down
When the man comes around.”

Song 2: “Earth Died Screaming,” by Tom Waits

There was thunder,
There was lightning,
Then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky,
It rained mackerel,
It rained trout
And the great day of wrath has come,
And here’s mud in your big red eye
And the poker’s in the fire and the locusts take the sky
Well, the earth died screaming
While I lay dreaming.”

Red Horse - blood

Song 3: “Blackened,” by Metallica

Planet dies
Darkest color
Blistered earth
True death of life
Termination
Expiration
Cancellation
Human race expectation
Liberation
Population
Lay to waste
See our mother
Put to death
See our mother die
Smoldering decay
Take your breath away
Millions of our years
In minutes disappears”

Song 4: “London Calling,” by The Clash

“The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
London is drowning-and I live by the river
London calling to the imitation zone
Forget it, brother, an’ go it alone
London calling upon the zombies of death
Quit holding out-and draw another breath”

Pale Horse - nuclear war
